Simple Deutsch is a free educational website for learning German. This policy explains what data is collected, why, and how you can control it.

This website is operated by a private individual. Full details are on the Imprint page.

3. Data we collect

Server logs

Our hosting provider automatically logs each request: IP address, browser type, requested URL, and response code. These logs are kept for up to 7 days for security monitoring and are then deleted automatically.

Contact via email

If you email us, your message and address are stored only for as long as needed to reply. We do not add you to any mailing list.

Browser storage (localStorage)

With your consent we save two items in your browser's localStorage: • sd-theme — your light/dark theme preference. • sd-read-pages — a list of article IDs you have read, to show read status indicators. Neither item is ever sent to our servers or shared with third parties. You can clear them at any time from your browser settings or via Cookie Settings in the footer.

Sensitive data

We do not collect health, financial, political, religious, or other sensitive data.

4. Cookies and browser storage

Strictly necessary

NEXT_LOCALE — a session cookie set by the server to remember your language choice. This cookie is essential for the site to work and is set without your consent under legitimate interest.

Preference storage

sd-theme and sd-read-pages (localStorage, see §3 above). These are only stored when you have given consent via the Cookie Settings dialog.

Analytics and marketing

We use no analytics cookies, no tracking pixels, no advertising networks, and no social-media scripts. Your browsing on Simple Deutsch is not shared with any third-party analytics or ad platform.

5. Legal bases (GDPR)

• Server logs: Art. 6(1)(f) — legitimate interest in security and abuse prevention.
• Email contact: Art. 6(1)(b) — necessary to respond to your request.
• Preference localStorage: Art. 6(1)(a) — your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

6. Data sharing

• We share data only with our hosting provider (Hetzner, Germany), who processes server logs as a data processor under a written agreement. We do not sell, rent, or otherwise disclose personal data to any other third party.

7. Data retention

Server logs are deleted after 7 days. Email correspondence is deleted once your issue is resolved. localStorage data stays on your device until you clear it or withdraw consent.

8. Your rights

Under GDPR you have the right to access, correct, restrict, or erase your personal data, to object to processing, and to data portability. To exercise these rights or to lodge a complaint, contact us by email (see Imprint).

9. Withdrawing consent

You can change or withdraw your consent at any time via Cookie Settings in the footer. Withdrawing consent removes sd-theme and sd-read-pages from localStorage and stops future writes.

10. Data security

All traffic is encrypted with HTTPS. Server logs are kept for only 7 days. We apply technical and organisational measures proportionate to the low risk profile of this site.

11. Children

This site is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If a parent or guardian believes their child has provided personal data, please contact us for deletion.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last revised. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
